Sorption-desorption behaviour of the amino acids glycine and serine on chemically pretreated alumina
The sorption-desorption behaviour of the amino acids glycine (Gly) and serine (Ser) from 90% ethanol on HCl/HNO 3- and NaOH/KOH-treated alumina of surface-phase pH 3.0–11.0 is investigated. The sorption is found to depend on pH of the substrate surface as well as acid or alkali used for pretreatment...

Summary: | The sorption-desorption behaviour of the amino acids glycine (Gly) and serine (Ser) from 90% ethanol on HCl/HNO
3- and NaOH/KOH-treated alumina of surface-phase pH 3.0–11.0 is investigated. The sorption is found to depend on pH of the substrate surface as well as acid or alkali used for pretreatment. Sorption is found to increase in the pH range 3.0–7.0 and then a gradual decrease occurs at pH 6.5–11.0. Maximum sorption is shown at pH 6.0–7.0. The process is fast and almost athermic (20°–50°C). Desorption efficacy and retarding influence on the adsorption by electrolytes is in the order

. It appears that the controlling force for sorption is predominantly ion-exchange. |
