Summary:The reaction of an aqueous solution of AlCl 3 on α'NaV 2O 5 allows separation of V( IV) and V( V) present in the vanadium oxide bronze. V( IV) being dissolved, the remaining powder consists of an intercalated compound of aluminium hydroxide in the V 2O 5 structure. Thermal treatment shows that this compound loses its water during a three-step process leading to a new AlV 3O 9 phase. This phase which occurs at 450°C decomposes at 580°C in V 2O 5 and AlVO 4.
