Summary: | The kinetic study of the reaction of polyisoprene and squalene with perbenzoic acid in solution in benzene, chloroform and CCl
4 is described. A decrease of the rate constant was found to occur with conversion and is explained by the conduction effect of the epoxide groups on the adjacent double bonds. The ratio of the individual rate constants
k
0,
k
1 and
k
2, which are characteristic of th effects of adjacent groups, were determined. Turbidimetric titration of the incomplete epoxidation products showed them to have large compositional uniformity. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to determine the distribution of reacted and unreacted chain units in the partly epoxidized polyisoprene and squalene. |
