Summary: | A kinetic study has been made of the initiated degradation of polycarbonates of various molecular weights. It is shown that a predominant role is played by the kinetics of decomposition of the initiator (benzoyl peroxide), as in the case of cellulose triacetate. Degradation of the polymers is due to identical efficiency of reactions of free valency transfer to the macromolecules. The emerging macroradicals do not participate in the chain decomposition reaction of benzoyl peroxide. The identical nature of kinetic features observed for the degradation of both polymers in the grassy state is accounted for in terms of the concept of structural microheterogeneity of these polymers. |
