Description
Summary:Organic sulfides comprise an important class of highly effective and widely used antioxidants. This paper presents an overview of key developments in the understanding of their mechanism of action as achieved through model system studies and provides further consideration of two complexities observed: induction periods and pro-oxidant effects. Work describing the effects of di- t-butyl sulfoxide and its derivatives on the decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide under nitrogen and autoxidizing conditions is presented. It is shown that strong acids generated from the sulfoxide can interact in three ways: (a) The strong acid decomposes hydroperoxide catalytically resulting in antioxidant effects. (b) The strong acid can react with hydroperoxide resulting in pro-oxidant effects. (c) The strong acid can be complexed by the parent sulfoxide reducing the hydroperoxide decomposing activity of the acid.
