Description
Summary:Charge-transfer complexes formed by the interaction of trimethylphenylammonium, tetramethylammonium and tetraethylammonium iodides with phosphorus oxychloride in acetonitrile have been investigated spectrophotometrically in the region 520-255 nm. Their composition, stability constants and free energy of formation have been calculated. The spectrum consisting of two maxima was described as a superposition of two Gaussian bands. The energy difference between the two maxima was interpreted as the 2P 3 2 − 2P 1 2 doublet splitting of the iodide ion. A mechanism of the interaction was discussed in which the production of iodine atoms is possible.
