Summary: | Solvent (water) and hydronium ion catalyzed rate constants for photodehydroxylation of several methoxybenzyl and dimethoxybenzyl alcohols are reported, derived from fluorescence quenching by hydronium ion and product quantum yield measurements. It is found that there is an additive substituent effect for promotion of photodehydroxylation. The results are discussed with reference to Förster cycle calculations for photoionization of ROH (to R
+ and
−OH) in the excited singlet state. |
