Summary:Amidst the backdrop of globalization and rapid technological advancements, the Chinese construction industry confronts an imperative need to evolve, addressing the inefficiencies and resource-intensive nature of its traditional housing construction model to meet the demands for sustainable, personalized, and technologically integrated living spaces. This paper underscores the pressing necessity for a transformative shift within the housing industry, advocating for the integration of advanced manufacturing principles and digital technologies to enhance construction efficiency and align with contemporary societal expectations. By employing a hybrid research methodology that combines bibliometric analysis with field measurements, the study assesses the impact of digitization on housing industrialization, revealing the potential for a smart construction industrial internet platform to act as the industry’s central nervous system. The research concludes that the strategic adoption of this platform, powered by artificial intelligence and big data, can significantly streamline project management, leading to a more coordinated and efficient construction process. This work contributes to the discourse on industry transformation by providing actionable insights for stakeholders, charting a course for the sustainable and high-quality evolution of the global housing industry. •Use bibliometric analysis to reveal trends and gaps in construction digitalization.•Combine bibliometrics and field data to explore digital tech’s impact on construction.•Integrate interdisciplinary theories to find gaps in digital construction.•Assess digital tech’s socio-economic impacts with case studies and propose solutions.
