Summary: | •Synthesized indicator 4,4HBHC is shown better results than phenolphthalein.•pH sensitivity range of the indicator found to be 7.5–8.0.•Qualitative identification of carboxylic acids was performed.•Qualitative identification of DMF and DMSO present in binary mixture was performed.•The indicator 4,4HBHC showed good photophysical and thermal properties.
A novel 4, 4-hydroxy benzylidene hydrazono coumarin [4,4HBHC] molecular probe for the identification of acids has been designed, synthesized and evaluated its indicator applications comparing with reference indicator phenolphthalein. Studies with different solvents revealed a naked eye noticeable color change, bathochromic shift in absorption spectrum and enhancement in fluorescence emission was observed. Detailed photo physical / solvatochromic properties of novel 4,4HBHC have been deliberated and its pH-sensitive properties were investigated, which showed bathochromic shift at incremental pH. While thermal and morphological stabilities of the novel indicator were studied by employing DSC and TGA measurement.
