Summary: | Representation in the public sphere is still a challenge for the afro-descendent women in the islands of the Hispanic Caribbean (Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic). These nations have little public policy to address the pervasive oppression of women and afro-descendants. Despite the efforts made during the last decade, associations in the public sphere have encountered problems both to emerge and to survive due to the absence of social and institutional support. In this context, cultural production has become an actual site for representation and intervention in the public sphere. This paper analyzes the collective and political value of some examples of cultural production (dance, fiction, and cultural narrative) of afro-descendant women in the above-mentioned nations. |
