High Temperature and Pressure Aqueous Solubility Data Bearing on the Stability of Silicates

Summary: | A method is discussed by which the aqueous solubility of$SiO_{2}$over free silica is compared with the solubility of the same constituent over more complex silicates. Relations between the two solubilities are shown to lead to information on the stability relations of certain heterogeneous reactions of petrogenic interest. More particularly, it is shown that the data for the incongruent solution of orthorhombic enstatite are consistent with the metastable solubility involving forsterite. These data give a value for the standard Gibbs free energy change for the reaction enstatite$\rightleftharpoons$forsterite + quartz at 873° K. which is close to the value expected from experimental evidence and thermochemical considerations. Several other reactions in the system$MgO-SiO_{2}-H_{2}O$are also discussed. |
