Purpose/Background: determine the knowledge and importance that students give to informed consent in scientific research. Methodology/Approach: mixed research was carried out with a cross-section

Purpose/Background: determine the knowledge and importance that students give to informed consent in scientific research. Methodology/Approach: mixed research was carried out with a cross-sectional descriptive scope and probabilistic design with 400 students from the academic programs of Business Administration, Nursing, Environmental Engineering and Bachelor of Humanities with emphasis on Spanish and English at the University of Cundinamarca, Girardot Section. The instruments were 8-question questionnaire and semi-structured interview. Results/Findings: 56,5 % of students are aware of the importance of obtaining informed consent in research. 65,4 % considered that respecting the autonomy of the subject participating in research makes them make decisions with self-determination. 58,0 % considered that the information provided to obtain consent should be that given by the researchers in a reasonable and clear manner. Regarding decision-making regarding participation in research, 65.1% stated that this depends on the clarity and understanding of the research. In relation to whether informed consent promotes the bioethical principle of respect for autonomy and its adequate implementation is essentially an ethical imperative, 56.4% responded affirmatively; Furthermore, regarding the ethical and legal obligation to provide information to the subject participating in a research, 79.3% stated that it is necessary to always provide it; Likewise, if it is ethically justified to make known the results of the research, 69.8% considered it. In relation to whether the research subject refuses to give consent to participate in a study, 49.0% considered that their participation in the research should be excluded. In general, it was found that 55.0% of the students in the four programs have a medium level of knowledge about informed consent. Discussion/Conclusions/Contributions: knowing about informed consent in students allowed us to shed light so that university curricula can be reviewed and updated in the area of research methodology.
