Summary: | Canada and the United States share more than 150 rivers and lakes along their borders, which have been subject to different conflicts. For such reason, cooperation mechanisms have been established, such as the International Joint Commission, with the aim of regulating and reconciling the topics concerning such shared basins. However, today those instruments are not sufficient anymore for the preservation of the environmental security and for providing proper management of the ecologic issues that arise. The hydropolitics dynamics involving such a country as the United States, which features a major water shortage, hold a relevant place in the agendas of these two governments, and compromise harder both countries sovereignty by creating tense relations and a lack of international institutional instruments which enable them to resolve these new conflicts on an effective way. |
