Description
Summary:The aim of this study was to determine the effects of overweight and obesity on body composition, physical function and academic performance throughout the primary and secondary school years. The sample included 70 children evaluated during 5 years. Data were obtained on body composition (Body Mass Index, Waist Hip Index, % body fat and % muscle mass), physical performance (long jump, high jump, agility test or Tapping Test, Cooper Test, manual pressure) and academic performance in each subject studied in both educational stages. The results showed that students who are overweight or obese have a worse body composition in ICC, body fat percentage and muscle percentage, among others. No significant differences were found in academic performance; however, the average grades were better in the normal weight group than in the overweight group.
