Summary:Karan Fries (KF) crossbred cows (24) in early lactation with good body condition (3 at 6 point scale) were randomly allotted to 2 treatments viz; loose shed with a provision for fan (Tl) or loose shed with a provision for fan with water sprinkling (TJ to compare microclimate, physiological reactions and various performance parameters of the animals during summer. Shed with evaporative cooling (TJ had lower maximum and minimum temperatures than shed with fan (Tl)' Furthermore; the T2 shed had significantly lower Db and Wb temperature, THI during morning and afternoon hours but significantly higher RH% during morning and afternoon hours than that of T1 shed. The T1 cows had higher values of RR, HR, RT and ST than T2cows during morning and afternoon hours. The cows under evaporative cooling consumed significantly higher dry matter, total digestible nutrients, crude protein and their milk production was_ significantly higher than those uader fan alone. Nutrient conversion efficiency as well as returns were better in T2group of cows vis-a-vis Tl cows. Thus the shed with fans alone was not sufficient to eliminate the heat stress in high yielding cows in northern part of India and water sprinkling with provision of fans was a more effective strategy for managing high yielding crossbred cows in summer.
