Description
Summary:This research describes gradient aspects of alveolar stops /t/ and /d/ palatalization, wich before /i/ are produced as [tj] and [d3]. The aim is to describe phonetic detail in Brazilian Portuguese dialect spoken in Jundiai-SP. In this dialect, alveolar stops are undergoing change towards affricates, due to contact with speakers from Campinas-SP. Five male subject's speech were analyzed, revealing that variation is not categorical or irreversible. Recordings consisted of a set of texts containing words with alveolar stops before [i]. Spectral moments of affricate's noise were computed and a cross-sectional study has shown instability in speaker's productions. A longitudinal analysis of two speakers also showed the different stages of accession to the variant. Keywords: Affricates; Gradient Allophony; Gestural Phonology.
