Description
Summary:The article presents the results of four excavation seasons at Khirbet Qeiyafa, 2007—2010. Nearly 10% of the site was excavated, in five different areas. A detailed account of the fortifications and private architecture clearly indicates typically Judean urban planning, known at four other Judean cities: Beersheba, Tell Beit Mirsim, Tell en-Naṣbeh and Tel Beth-Shemesh. The radiometric dating of Khirbet Qeiyafa has clearly placed the construction of this city in the late eleventh and early tenth centuries BCE. This provides a clear indication that the transition from the agrarian social organization of the Iron Age I to the urban society of the Iron Age II occurred in Judah as early as the tenth century BCE, rather than in the ninth or even late eighth centuries BCE as argued by certain "minimalist" schools.
