Summary:In the theory of the four humours (blood, yellow bile, black bile, phlegm), daily variations in the humours appear only in late medicine, after Galen. Until now we have had only two witnesses to this, both deriving from the Latin tradition (Pseudo-Vindician’s Letter to Pentadius and Pseudo-Soranos, Isagoge Saluberrima, which derives from the Letter to Pentadius). This paper adds two Greek recently-published testimonies (2005-2006) and previously another Latin one. All these texts are attributed to Hippocrates and form two groups with two systems of daily variation. In one of these groups daily variation in level of humours is used to explain the formation of the four temperaments according to the time of day when each humour prevails.
