Description
Summary:The article continues the analysis, already started in the first part, of the process of professional transformation of the Tharaka medicine of Kenya by taking into account the history of the foundation and development of the seven groups of agao (healers) arisen between 1985 and 1994. After giving a descriptive account of them, the author analyses their ways of making, the internal dynamics, the rudimentary formulation of a deontological code, and the innovations produced in the professional practice; suggesting to consider such processes as part of an overall transformation of the «professional statute» of the mugao well-grounded on a new form of organic solidarity. Finally, the problems of the integration of indigenous medicine in the national health care system and of its legitimacy are taken into account within the framework of both the present-day Tharaka community and the Kenyan political context.
