Enlightenments are obtained in the end to provide valuable implications. As a reference example, the research of this paper ushered in a practical framework of social risk management which may be effectively applied in other fields of program implementation. •An integral framework of social risk management for mega project is presented.•A case in the context of urbanization in West China is tracked to apply the management framework.•The function of local government and administrative measures is specially addressed for the practical risk handling.•The management mechanism contributes to mitigate and monitor social risks in transition economies.
