Summary: | BACKGROUND
After analyzing the relationship between 10 medical diagnoses and the NANDA classification, a set of related links between medical diagnoses and nursing diagnoses was drafted for the medical/surgical unit. Because one nursing diagnosis is related to many nursing interventions, the relationships established by the NIC study team between NANDA diagnoses and NIC interventions was used.
MAIN CONTENT POINTS
System programs are divided into five modules: user interface, management of standardized data, searching expected nursing diagnoses and interventions, management of nursing activities, and statistics retrieval. The database consists of two parts: knowledge and activity. All data maintained by the modules for management of standardized data are stored in the knowledge database. The modules for searching expected nursing diagnoses and interventions also use the knowledge database. All data produced by the modules for management of nursing activities and the modules for retrieving statistics on nursing activities are stored in the activity database.
The system will be operated in connection with an order communication system currently in use in hospitals. Therefore, development tools were selected considering this connection.
The menus for system operations are divided into four parts: management of master data, management of patient and nurse information, management of nursing activity, and retrieving statistics on nursing activity. The part for management of master data consists of five submenus: medical diagnosis, nursing diagnosis, nursing interventions, relationships between medical diagnosis and nursing diagnosis, and relationships between nursing diagnosis and nursing intervention. Through the user interface screen, nurses select medical diagnoses and then confirm the nursing diagnoses suggested.
CONCLUSIONS
The system will help nurses perform their nursing processes more efficiently. However, further studies of the system are mandatory. After verifying the usefulness of the system, further analysis of the relationship between medical diagnoses and nursing diagnoses is also necessary. |
