Summary:One of the least known links between Canada and Cuba is the fact that the first Spanish translation of Louis Hemon's French-Canadian classic, "Maria Chapdelaine," was done by a major Cuban writer--Alfonso Hernandez Cata. The reasons why Cata undertook the translations are examined, and the strengths and weaknesses of his translation strategies are discussed.
