Summary: | The dose-related side effects of phenytoin are namely gingival hyperplasia hirsutism, thickening of facial features, vitamin D deficiency, folate acid deficiency, osteomalacia and peripheral neuropathy. Whereas, dose-related side effects include effects on the central nervous system (somnolence, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, visual disturbances, nystagmus, ataxia), effects on the gastrointestinal tract (nausea and vomiting, anorexia)4. Drug levels in the blood of patients using phenytoin are strongly influenced by the condition of the patient, such as body weight, albumin level and patient's kidney condition and patient adherence with phenytoin consumption4;6. Adherence measurements were carried out before and after the administration of self-medication card (next month visit). a. Determination of adherence with the ARMS questionnaire Patients and their families were given an ARMS questionnaire before giving the self-medication card and after 1 month of using this card. b. Determination of phenytoin levels in blood Determination of the level of phenytoin in the blood by taking the sample shortly before taking the medication or 6-8 hours after taking the last medication. |
