Summary: | The article focuses on Voltaire's Le tocsin des rois, composed at Catherine the Great's request, during the Russian-Turkish War, at the end of 1771. In 1772–1774, the text was translated into Romanian by Toma Dimitriu, a Greek from Kastoria who had established in Moldova in 1758 and who authored numerous translations, mostly from Greek, but also from French. Dimitriu's still unedited rendition of Le tocsin des rois is one of the oldest translations from French into Romanian. This research presents the morpho-syntactic and lexical features of the text, discusses the methodological difficulties raised by Dimitriu's translation techniques, and sheds light onto an unknown part of the history of the influence of the French literature onto the Romanian one. |
