Description
Summary:Giovanni Leoncini's essay, "La Certosa, luogo dello spirito" (37-60), which follows, describes more broadly the Carthusian movement and the purpose it served in medieval Europe, counterbalancing Caferro's emphasis on how wealth delivered opportunity to Acciaiuoli with a reflection on the spiritual life that Acciaiuoli supported. Starting off is an essay by Francesco Salvestrini, "Inquietudini religiose, presenze monastic-eremitiche e tradizione contemplativa nella Firenze del Trecento" (61-89), detailing the spiritual fervent that characterized Florence, with Salvestrini attributing this activity to an abiding sense of disquiet in the city. The building comes to resemble a mausoleum in the form of a monastery, a self-serving monument to Acciaiuoli for which the Carthusians were a convenient vehicle.
