Summary: | Human resource management has attractedsignificant attention among researchers of publicmanagement. It is increasingly accepted that committedand satisfied employees are strategic resources in anyorganization. The idiosyncrasies of the armed forces andthe professionalization processes they have undergonenecessitate a study of the attitudes of military personneltowards work in the sector. This paper analyses thedeterminants of job satisfaction in the military. Threefactors (“Work itself”, “Economic aspects” and “Personalrelationships”) are identified based on data from theInternational Social Survey Programme (ISSP). Both thecomposition and the impact of these factors on jobsatisfaction vary according to the hierarchical rank of aworker. The findings confirm the importance ofdifferentiated human resources policies that take intoaccount the hierarchical diversity of the military. Ourresults provide new evidence and valuable practicalinformation for human resource management in thearmed forces. We provide policymakers and managers ofthe military sector with recommendations that allow themto reinforce the ability of the armed forces to attract,retain and motivate talent. |
