Summary: | Background: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is a highly effective treatment for severe obesity. However, weight recurrence (WR) is a major post-operative challenge that can decrease the short and long-term health benefits associated with MBS. Additionally, post-MBS WR is a significant source of distress for patients. Prior studies have shown that binge eating behaviors (BEB) and food addiction (FA) are predictors of post-MBS WR, but little research has examined their independent associations with post-MBS WR. Methods: This cross-sectional study used a self-reported questionnaire to collect patient demographics, anthropometric measures, eating behaviors, and social/self-perceptions post-MBS (mean 11 years) from a single academic obesity medicine program. The Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 and Binge Eating Scale were used to score eating behaviors/ related perceptions and create comprehensive FA and BEB exposure variables, respectively. WR was treated as binary variables using cut-offs at 5% increments. Crude associations were determined using ANOVA/ chi-square tests. Multivariable logistic regression models determined the adjusted odds ratios (aOR) of FA and BEB with WR, controlling for age at time of MBS, BMI at age 18 and time of MBS, and MBS procedure. Results: The analysis included 294 MBS patients (mean age 55 years [10.6], 90.5% female, 51.7% non-Hispanic White, mean BMI at time of surgery 44.6 [18.0], mean BMI nadir 32.4 [8.6], mean current BMI 35.9 [9.9] kg/m2, 33.2% sleeve gastrectomy, 27.4% roux-en-Y gastric bypass, median WR 14.4% [42.9]). Of which, 9.8% reported severe BEB, 21.5% mild-moderate BEB, while 12.6% reported severe FA, 7.4% moderate FA, and 7.4% mild FA.
