Summary: | The use of mobile devices to access internal network applications has skyrocketed over the past few years, due in large part to strategic competitive advantages such as enhanced employee productivity and customer satisfaction and retention. Attacks against conventional mobile devices by malicious third parties and disgruntled employees -- either current or recently terminated -- have also increased. Meanwhile, manufacturers have focused more on acquiring new customers than on protecting their devices against attacks. The purpose of this article is to expose CPAs to leading technologies that can help mitigate the risk that sensitive data -- such as personally identifiable client information, audit working papers, tax returns, and knowledge management data -- stored on mobile devices may be lost or stolen. These technologies include automated wireless security management systems (WSMS) for larger organizations and cost-effective thin computing for smaller organizations. CPAs could benefit from understanding the capabilities of automated wireless security solutions discussed in this article. |
