Chemical characteristics of pond waters in the Labyrinth of southern Victoria Land, Antarctica
Water samples from 61 ponds in the Labyrinth of the upper Wright valley were analysed for lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulphate, fluoride and boride and deuterium /hydrogen and 18-oxygen/16-oxygen ratios. The chloride value exceeded sulphate concentrations in most ponds....

Summary: | Water samples from 61 ponds in the Labyrinth of the upper Wright valley were analysed for lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulphate, fluoride and boride and deuterium /hydrogen and 18-oxygen/16-oxygen ratios. The chloride value exceeded sulphate concentrations in most ponds. Thirty-five ponds were saline. The deuterium and 18-oxygen values in the ponds indicated a snow and/or glacial meltwaters origin followed by evaporation or freezing. The salt concentrations were explained by accumulation of atmospheric salts and cycles of evaporation and freezing. |
