The article is based on the book A parte e o todo: a diversidade cultural no Brasil-nação where Oliven (2006) in the chapter entitled "Em busca do tempo perdido: o Movimento Tradicionalista Gaúcho" discusses their historical constitution and anthropological dimensions. Ao igualmente ressaltar seu caráter mítico de invenção das tradições gaúchas pelos tradicionalistas como diferenciador dessa produção de identidades regionais, com relação ao Brasil objetiva-se dialogar com a análise do autor, e com o campo inaugurado por Hobsbawm e Ranger (1984).
