Summary: | Single crystals of NaEu sub(9)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(2), Na sub(1.5)Eu sub(8.5)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)OF, Na sub(1.64)Gd sub(8.36)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(0.72)F sub(1.28), Gd sub(9.34)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(2), Ca sub(2.6)Eu sub(7.4)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(1.4)F sub(0.6), Ca sub(4.02)Sm sub(5.98)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)F sub(2), and K sub(1.32)Pr sub(8.68)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(1.36)F sub(0.64) and powders of NaEu sub(9)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(2), Na sub(1.5)Eu sub(8.5)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)OF, Eu sub(9.34)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(2), and Gd sub(9.34)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(2) were synthesized via flux growth in selected alkali-fluoride melts. All of the compounds adopt the apatite structure with space group P6 sub(3)/m. Luminescence and magnetic data were collected on NaEu sub(9)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(2), Na sub(1.5)Eu sub(8.5)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)OF, Eu sub(9.34)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(2), and Gd sub(9.34)(SiO sub(4)) sub(6)O sub(2). Luminescent data indicate that changing the cations and anions that surround the lanthanide site does not change the luminescent properties, making apatites versatile structures for optical materials. |
