Summary: | According to State Tax Collections and Rates, a Tax Foundation Special Report, state tax and fee collections were 8% higher during fiscal year 2000 than during fiscal year 1999. Nationwide, the average per capita collection was $1,899 in fiscal year 2000, and the average amount of tax collected per $1,000 of personal income was $67.23. Individual income taxes rose 12.9% between fiscal year 1999 and fiscal year 2000, continuing the trend that made it overtake sales taxes as the biggest source of state receipts in 1998. Five states and the District of Columbia made significant changes to individual income tax rates in 2001. California was the one state to increase its sales tax rate in 2001, from 5.75% to 6%, and Colorado was the one to reduce its rate, from 3% to 2.9%. |
