Effect of pH on the Rate of Corrosion of Gold in Acid Sulfate Solutions

Tests have indicated that for Au dissolution to form an aquo-gold there should be no effect of pH on the E-i curve. To verify this prediction a study was made of the effect of solution pH on the current potential curves for the formation of Au(OH) sub 3 and for the anodic dissolution of Au. The data...

Description
Summary:Tests have indicated that for Au dissolution to form an aquo-gold there should be no effect of pH on the E-i curve. To verify this prediction a study was made of the effect of solution pH on the current potential curves for the formation of Au(OH) sub 3 and for the anodic dissolution of Au. The data show that the mechanisms for anodic film and for O evolution have the same rate-determining step, probably involving the oxidation of water to an intermediate O or OH radical. Since the rate Au dissolution in these solutions is very low, the error and scatter increase with the decreasing polarization times. Regardless of the scatter, there is a clear indication that the rate of anodic dissolution of Au is independent of pH in acid sulfate solutions.--H.B.C.
