Summary: | The heterogeneous reaction between metallic aluminium and solid silver iodide has been studied by following the aluminium weight loss as a function of reaction time. The reaction does not take place unless there is water vapour in the environment and an iodide, soluble in water, incorporated in the silver iodide. Depending on the working conditions, different kinetic behaviour is found which is interpreted in terms of an initial chemical reaction followed by a rate-controlling transport step. The role of water vapour and the second soluble iodide is explained on the basis of their dissolution effect on the solid silver iodide. |
