Study of the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of new peroxydicarbonates

Peroxides of the general formula ROC(O)OOC(O)OR, with R=C 6H 5C(O)OCH 2CH 2, CH 3(OCH 2CH 2) 2; C 6H 5(OCH 2CH 2) 2, and also a product where R is a mixture of three hydrocarbon radicals C 16H 33, C 18H 37 and C 20H 41 in the ratio 1 : 1 : 1, were studied as initiators of the polymerization of methy...

Description
Summary:Peroxides of the general formula ROC(O)OOC(O)OR, with R=C 6H 5C(O)OCH 2CH 2, CH 3(OCH 2CH 2) 2; C 6H 5(OCH 2CH 2) 2, and also a product where R is a mixture of three hydrocarbon radicals C 16H 33, C 18H 37 and C 20H 41 in the ratio 1 : 1 : 1, were studied as initiators of the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). It was found that polymerization of MMA in the presence of percarbonates at 50–80° in the high conversion Range exhibits a less pronounced gel-effect than in the presence of conventional peroxides. This is explained by the weak inhibiting properties due to particular structural features of the organic fragments of the percarbonates studied.
