Summary:Recognizing the importance of cultural contexts on the development of social competence, this paper examines the differences in parents' rankings of importance of 8 social competency items. Mothers and fathers of Japanese and European ancestry rated the items for children ranging from 8 to 18 years of age. A multiple analysis of covariance disclosed a significant main effect for ethnicity and for the ethnicity by age of child interaction. The results are interpreted with respect to Ogbu's model of cultural ecology. The possible impact of cultural differences within the family context with regard to the development of social competence in the child is discussed. Admettant l' importance des contextes culturels sur le developement de la competence sociale, cet expose étudie les differences entre les evaluations des parents sur l'importance de huit points de competence sociale. Les mères et les peres d'ascendance japonaise et européenne évaluèrent les items pour enfants allant de 8 a 18 ans. Une analyes multiple de "covariance" laissa voir un effet principal considerable pour l'ethnique et pour l'ethnique d'après l'âge de l'interaction chez l'enfant. Les résultats sont interpretes par rapport au modele d'écologie culturelle d'Ogbu. L'effet possible des differences culturelles a l'intérieur du contexte familial, en ce qui concerne le development de competence sociale chez l'enfant, est eamaine. Padres y madres de ascendencia japonesa y europea, evaluaron los aspectos para ninos de 8 a 18 anos de edad, Un multiple análisis de co-variantes resulto en un signigicativo efecto principal por etnicidad y por etnicidad de acuerdo a la edad de interacción del nino. Los resultados se interpretan con respecto al modelo de ecología cultural de "Ogbu". Este estudio trata del posible impacto de las diferencias culturales dentro del contexto de la familia con respecto al desarrollo de la competencia social en el nino.
