Behavior of chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, mercury, and lead during the pyrolysis of sewage sludge

Description
Summary:Samples of dried sewage sludge (raw sludge and anaerobically stabilized sludge) were pyrolysed at 350, 505, or 750C under anoxic conditions. In all experiments, chromium, nickel, copper, zinc and lead were completely retained in the solid residue. Cadmium was retained in the solid residue at a pyrolysis temperature of 505C, but was transferred to the off-gas at 750C. Mercury was volatilized at all pyrolysis temperatures. Metals contained in the solid char were resistant to acid leaching (water acidified to pH 3.2 using hydrochloric acid). It was concluded that temperatures of 500-600C were best suited for pyrolysis of sewage sludge, and that the solid residue could be safely disposed of in an inorganic sanitary landfill.
