Nickel-coating stainless-steel plates for cladding

In producing bimetallic products, the Kommunarsk Metallurgical Plant deposits a layer of electrolytic nickel from an electrolyte consisting of 200-250 g/liter nickel sulfate, 25-30 g/liter boric acid, and 10-20 and 5-6 g/liter sodium chloride and sodium fluoride. Description
Summary:In producing bimetallic products, the Kommunarsk Metallurgical Plant deposits a layer of electrolytic nickel from an electrolyte consisting of 200-250 g/liter nickel sulfate, 25-30 g/liter boric acid, and 10-20 and 5-6 g/liter sodium chloride and sodium fluoride. The operation is done at a pH of 4.2-5.2, electrolyte temperature of 42-45 degree C, and current density of 1-2 A/dm super(2). However, study of the contact surfaces of the "sandwiches" (packets) after heating and prior to rolling has shown that the nickel coating experiences swelling, lamination, and rupture, and that the surface of the stainless steel is heavily oxidized at these places. As a result, the bimetallic packets delaminate during manufacture and use.
