Summary: | Strategies for the prevention of Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) infection including vaccination are needed in developing countries. However safety and efficacy of Hib vaccines among HIV-infected children should be assessed in countries where both infections are prevalent. Children born to HIV-positive (HIV+) and to HIV-negative (HIV-) mothers were enrolled and followed-up in a prospective cohort study on the impact of HIV type (HIV-) infection on pregnancy in Kigali Rwanda. After informed consent of their mother was obtained a consecutive sample of these children received three doses of Hib capsular polysaccharide conjugated to tetanus toxoid (PRP-T) vaccine (Batch S Pasteur-Merieux Serums et Vaccins Marcy l'Etoile France) at and months of age in addition to routine immunisation performed according to the schedule of the expanded programme on immunization (EPI) of the world health organization. Serum samples collected to study the immunogenicity of the vaccine in this cohort were lost during the civil war in Rwanda. Consequently we report on the reactogenicity of this vaccine used under field conditions in children in Africa. |
