Description
Summary:The capacity of the clay minerals, kaolinite and montmorillonite, to remove lead from landfill leachates at different pH values was investigated. Lead removal from leachates increased with increasing pH value, and with increasing concentration of lead in solution. Montmorillonite removed approximately five times more lead from lead nitrate solutions than did kaolinite, and large reductions in lead adsorption occurred in the presence of landfill leachate. Lead removal is primarily a cation-exchange mechanism which is affected by ionic competition for adsorption sites, and by pH value. Data are given for the required thickness of a clay lining to remove lead from landfill leachates. (JOK)
