Summary: | While technology increases productivity and flexibility at work, both in traditional office and remote employment settings, the same tools have potential negative impacts on individual wellness and outcomes. Information and communications technologies (ICT) have driven the "third industrial revolution" (World Economic Forum, 2016) and as new technologies continue to be realized, it is important to recognize that ICT creates its own unique form of stress, technostress. It has been measured by self-report and through medical instruments and there is evidence that technostress activates a stress response, which often has long-term health implications. The authors present relevant definitions, and implications for prevention and intervention. |
