Summary: | Change has become the standard in everyday life. In many organizations, the banner cry has been to promote change and expect increased performance concurrently. In the current environment, organizations seem to have little choice: change or become extinct. Although change appears to be a given, choices exist as to how the changes will occur and be implemented. When the followers' reactions to change are ignored or downplayed, the price is usually demonstrated in the areas of loyalty, expertise, consistency, credibility and motivation. Leaders may wish to interpret the employees' reactions as illogical or unreasonable, yet the employees' reactions are as legitimate as the need for change. One of the largest adjustments shared by employees and managers is the change to their roles in the organization. Leaders, when dealing with change, need to develop strategies to support the vast majority of employees by creating more diverse information and communication approaches. |
