Description
Summary:Maintaining security over microcomputers can be difficult, but some simple and inexpensive techniques can substantially reduce the likelihood of security breaches. The basic strategy of security is to create layers or levels of obstacles that an intruder must pass before reaching confidential data. MS-DOS has several obscure capabilities that can be effective for data security purposes, including the ability to hide files, directories, and characters from view. Other DOS commands can be used to lock the keyboard, to change the screen color, or to activate the computer's internal bell. Various software packages that improve security offer such functions as: 1. enhanced password control, 2. user logging, and 3. data encryption. There are 3 ways to protect information on a hard or floppy disk: 1. write-protection, 2. zero-disking, and 3. disk branding.
