Summary: | A good dimensional measurement plan should prevent downstream difficulties, produce acceptable measurements, and enable modifications for measuring similar parts and features. The ASME B89.3.2 Working Group has proposed a draft standard for such a plan. It is based on the principle that the gaging process must create an acceptable measurement uncertainty - uncertainty the maximum difference expected between measured and true dimensions. An acceptable uncertainty is key to how many bad parts will be accepted and how many good ones will be rejected. The ASME B89.3.2 Working Group's procedure requires preparations like reviewing drawings and other product specifications to make sure that they are clear, defined, and understandable. A wrong guess about what a designer wants will render work useless. The manufacturing plan also must be understood. Form-error control and process stability can strongly affect gage choice and sampling frequency. |
