Summary: | Some of the most effective approaches to employee motivation include: 1. Management believes that people have abilities and want to work. 2. Management develops employees by training them to be efficient and skillful. 3. Employees are involved in the thinking behind the doing - not just hands-on grunt-work. Two additional maxims are proposed based on an important, yet-all-too-frequently neglected idea: idealism. Idealism provides motivational opportunities because of healthy individuals' desires to do good and to lead meaningful lives, specifically: 1. to achieve a sense of significance through knowing their work has real meaning, and 2. to rest easy at night, feeling secure that their work is ethical. |
