Summary: | Foundry coating is one of the essential things that need to be considered in the metal casting process which will act as a barrier between molten metal and mold during the casting process to prevent thermal shock. Zircon is widely used as filler on foundry coating, but it has a relatively high price, while the function of the foundry coating itself is to produce better casting products so that secondary processing costs can reduced. In this research, the effect of partial substitution of talc on zircon to produce high-quality foundry coatings will be studied. The study aims to determine the feasibility of talc to provide a good foundry coating. The samples were made with varied in the composition of talc 16 wt.%, 18 wt.%, and 20 wt.%, and the samples will be given a variety of treatment, drying at room temperature and 100 °C. The characterization used in this study is Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) to analyze the particle size and, its distribution, Viscometer to investigate the viscosity of the slurry, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to analyze the compound, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to analyze the coating morphology and Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (STA) to investigate the thermal stability of the coatings. The characterization result shows that talc is feasible to use as zircon partial substitution. |
