Summary: | Data from 19 Minn communities with populations under 10,000 are analyzed to determine the extent to which media choice is affected by community type & structure. Sample sizes ranged from 88 to 183 in the area probability sample. Trained interviewers conducted in-home interviews. Support was found for the proposition that in communities where the local paper is weekly rather than daily, daily newspaper reading will be lower & TV viewing higher. Thus, community structure affects the use of different media by its determination of the types of newspapers available to people. Education level & media use & preference are also examined using rank r coefficients. Preference for different media results in exposure to a greater or lesser amount of information about either local or national affairs. These differences may have outcomes which affect the participation & understanding of public issues at the local, national, & international levels. 5 Figures. N. Jahnke. |
